2.0b2 will not work on less than 10.6!! (Macupdate.com)

If you’re coming here from Macupdate.com, expecting to get 2.0b2 working on anything less than 10.6, you will probably be disappointed. They updated the listing without asking me, removing 1.1b5 and replacing it with 2.0b2, which isn’t ready for prime time yet.

My goal is to get it working with 10.5 at least, but initial reports indicate that doesn’t work yet.

You can still access 1.1b5 or the Universal Binary (which is the better option) from the links on the right.

UPDATE: It’s not just Macupdate.com. It looks like everything got updated. Must be one automated script that just notified everything else. Oh well, I guess it’s open season!

2.0b2 available to everyone

First, I want to thank my group of private beta testers. The feedback you’ve given me has been great, and has made me feel comfortable enough to open this up to everyone.

Feel free to download 2.0b2, but please comment in this post after you’ve used it for a while and let me know how it goes. Please provide your OS version, Mac model, and any other relevant information you can think of.

* Because it’s a beta, some of the ease-of-use isn’t there yet. So it’s a totally manual installation right now.

* PS is now a service, not a contextual menu plugin. You’ll need to remove the contextual menu plugin, and place the service in ~/Library/Services.

* You will want to replace the preference pane with the new one. You can just double-click the preference pane and it will auto-install. Make sure System Preferences is not running, or it will probably crash.

* You’ll want to delete your existing com.bergenstreetsoftware.PathSnagger.plist file. It actually reads from com.bergenstreetsoftware.PathSnaggerService.plist now, but why confuse things?

* Documentation isn’t there yet. I’m working on it.

* This distribution is via a .zip file. I’ll have it in a .dmg file for the final release.

* I’m running 10.6. I haven’t tested this on anything less than 10.6. I’d love to know if this works on 10.5.

Right now, it ships with four menu items: Snag Path Unix, HFS, Windows, and File://. I haven’t found a decent UI-based way to hide or show those, so they’re all on by default. If you want to, you can edit the info.plist in the service. Email me if you want instructions on how to do it. It’s not hard, but is a bit involved.

Even though this is a service, if you’re running 10.5 or 10.6, it will show up as a contextual menu option, just like the old PathSnagger. You can also access them from the Services menu if you want.

It’s been a long time coming, but a PathSnagger update is on the way. I started work on the 10.5/10.6 version (this will likely be version 2.0) and it works in Snow Leopard. The easy bits are done. I’ll focus on the tricky stuff next.

Got side-railed briefly when svn stopped working. Got that ironed out, and I’m back on development. The code to escape all the Unix special characters (\”?*, etc.) has been hashed out. I’m hoping to roll that into the code this week. This is definitely the biggest complaint right now (aside from the lack of an official Universal Binary) so once that’s done, an actual release should follow pretty quickly.

Okay, I think I’m going try a new approach. It seems I bit off more than I could chew for the next release, so I’m going to drop a number of new features, and just focus on getting a solid Universal Binary out the door. Once that’s done, I can start working on the enhancements, which will hopefully speed things up.

PathSnagger has not been abandoned! I just haven’t been able to work on it for quite a while. (Having a baby will do that to you.) Things are calming down now, and I’m plugging away at the new version.

On track for the next release are Windows paths (finally!) and a software update mechanism, plus a few other goodies.

Universal Binary Test Build Available

I’m really sorry PathSnagger isn’t working on Intel Macs. I’m trying to get it done soon. For various reasons, the computer has been offline and I haven’t had much time to do any work on it.

For those of you who absolutely can’t wait, there is a Universal binary version available, although I can’t guarantee its stability. I’ve had a couple of people test it on their Intel Macs, and it worked, but that’s about the best I can do (unless someone wants to donate a MacBook to the cause .. ) It has a number of new features that haven’t really been turned on (ie, the UI is there, but the functionality is not.) So yes, it says something about automatically updating and Windows paths and some other goodies, but it won’t work! There, I warned you.

That said, all the old functionality should be there. So if you’re feeling brave, download the Universal Binary build and let me know how it works for you.

Universal Binary

PPC-only preference panes don’t work on the new Intel Macs, because System Preferences launches in Intel-only mode. Sadly, this affects PathSnagger. A workaround, documented at MacFixIt, is to force the System Preferences application to run under Rosetta:

You can, however, force the System Preferences application to run under Rosetta (navigate to /Applications, click on the System Preferences icon, go to Get Info and check “Run with Rosetta”) in order to access such Preference panes on your Intel-based Mac.

MacFixIt reader Stéphane has put this workaround into practice, and notes: “In this case, the native will not run any more, but it’s a workaround. You can probably make a copy of the ‘System Preferences’ application, for PPC Prefpanes only; and leave the original for the native ones.”

If you don’t want to do this, the alternative involves editing the ~/Library/Preferences/com.bergenstreetsoftware.PathSnagger.plist file manually.

The next release of PathSnagger will be a Universal Binary, so this shouldn’t be a problem at that point.
